The burden of the material and relationship is common for all man. The westerners concern themselves with love and friendship in personal life and networking in business and communities. The East like the Chinese are concerned with worldly ties. The tie between two people concerns “face” and “favors”. People with “face” associate with the same while a favor done creates a tie or an obligation that should be returned one of these days. Possessing material things and names, titles or reputation, give one “face”.
Family or clans with the same surnames are worldly ties that connect people with obligation for favors. Face for the family must be preserved at all cost. They create tremendous burden for everyone in the Chinese world. The westerners have less of a community burden, but the personal burden is greater because ego is a bigger thing for the individual in the west.
